Japanese supermarket sales declined 0.8 percent year-on-year in December, the Japan Chain Stores Association said Tuesday. The annual fall reversed November’s 0.7 percent increase.
Before store adjustment, sales were up 2.6 percent.
The Japanese government last week upgraded its assessment of the economy for the first time in four months as the recovery picked up. The cabinet office said private consumption is increasing, reflecting a spur in demand in some sectors before a planned consumption tax hike in April.
